Houston, Texas

I write software, photograph fashion shows, and crew a tall ship.

I founded Atelier Actara, a platform that runs fashion shows, and I am its only engineer. Before that I spent fifteen years in production software, as an engineer and as a manager at Chess.com, Invisible Technologies, and Amplify. I have photographed fashion as Outside the Obvious since 2018, and I crew Elissa, the 1877 barque that sails out of Galveston.

What I do

Software

I build in Elixir and Phoenix, React and TypeScript, and Postgres, with native iOS and Android when a product needs them. I have managed engineers at Chess.com, Invisible Technologies, and Amplify, built a QA function from nothing at Invisible, and owned the new-user roadmap at Chess.com. At Atelier Actara I write all of it, from the schema to the apps.

Photography

I photograph fashion shows, mostly from backstage, and publish the work as Outside the Obvious. Since 2018 I have shot more than ninety runway shows in Houston and at New York Fashion Week, and published three photo books. Part of the work is on film, which I develop myself.

Sailing

I am crew aboard Elissa, a three-masted iron barque built in 1877 that the Galveston Historical Foundation keeps sailing. I stand watches, work aloft, and handle sail on day sails in the Gulf. In June 2026 I was aboard for her passage up the Atlantic coast to New York and kept the ship's log at onlytallships.com.

02 · Atelier Actara

A platform that runs fashion shows

Atelier Actara carries a show from casting to the door. Producers build the lineup and walk order, assign looks, plan the venue, and run the guest list and check-in. Agency bookers manage a roster across many shows. Models, crew, and media confirm their own bookings and read their own call times. Agencies, brands, and venues work the same show without seeing each other's data. I made the first commit in December 2022, built it alongside full-time roles for three and a half years, and in June 2026 it became its own company with me as founder and principal engineer.

Who uses it

The customers are production houses, independent producers, modeling agencies, and fashion week organizers. Each show's public page, with its talent profiles and producer-confirmed credits, stays up free as a record of who worked it.

How it is built

The back end is Elixir, split into separate apps for shows, people, permissions, venues, guests, messaging, billing, and imports, with a GraphQL API in front of it. Web, native iOS, native Android, and a command-line admin tool all use that one API, so the business rules exist in one place.

How I work on it

I am the only engineer, and AI-assisted development is the documented standard. The repository carries written engineering conventions, a product document that governs every word on screen, agent skill definitions, and verification gates that run before a change ships, including a script that fails copy on known machine-writing tells. A set of agents playing CEO, PM, CTO, developer, QA, and COO run sprint loops against the repository and coordinate through shared files, and I review what they produce.

What else I own

I set the pricing, wrote the financial plan and the investor materials, and designed the brand and the design system the product ships with. I also produce shows through the platform, which is where most of the feature requests come from.

03 · Experience

Fifteen years in production software

Engineers have reported to me at Chess.com, Invisible Technologies, and Amplify Life Insurance. Before that I built energy and industrial software in Houston at Landdox, Quorum, and BSD Consulting. The résumé has the full version.

  1. Jun 2026 to now

Atelier Actara Founder and principal engineer · Remote

I designed and built the whole system as its only engineer: the Elixir back end, the web, iOS, and Android apps, and the multi-tenant permission model that lets agencies, brands, and venues share a show. I set the pricing, wrote the financial plan, and designed the brand. The section above has the detail.

  2. Jun 2025 to Apr 2026

Chess.com Technical product manager · Remote

I managed three engineers and owned the new-user experience roadmap, sequencing work across product and engineering and holding the release plan for it. I led the onboarding and Connect work streams, which shipped changes to millions of players. I wrote the specs engineers built from, and added the onboarding and activation metrics the team uses to judge funnel changes.

  3. Mar 2023 to Feb 2025

Invisible Technologies Principal engineer and partner · Remote

Invisible is an AI services company that delivers to OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon. I managed two engineering teams in parallel, with four engineers reporting to me, and owned delivery, hiring, and performance for both. I built the QA function from nothing, with testing standards, documentation, and an automated suite that took coverage from zero to 85 percent. I ran technical hiring, promoted engineers from inside the company, and wrote core product code.

  4. Jun 2022 to now

Applied Generics Founder · Remote, alongside the roles above

Under this name I build APIs and full applications for clients. Atelier Actara started here in December 2022.

  5. Sep 2021 to Jun 2022

Amplify Life Insurance Staff engineer · Remote

Amplify was standing up its first engineering team and software stack when I joined. I managed three engineers and ran sprint planning, scoping, and retrospectives. I replaced the legacy stack with a company-wide Elixir API server and Postgres database, with continuous integration and tests from the first commit, built the React and Redux front ends against it, and defined the code review policy the team used.

  6. Jun to Sep 2021

Vic.ai Senior Elixir engineer · Remote

I shipped core Elixir for an early-stage startup and introduced retrospectives, documentation, and project planning. I built a CSV importer that handled arbitrary client file formats.

  7. Oct 2020 to May 2021

Quorum Software Senior software engineer · Houston

Quorum makes enterprise software for the energy industry and bought Landdox in 2020. I integrated the Landdox product into their much larger legacy codebase.

  8. Jun 2015 to Oct 2020

Landdox Full stack engineer, second engineer hired · Houston

Landdox made land management software for oil and gas. I planned and led the major features: mapping, bulk data import, and a system that generated payment checks. I interviewed and hired engineers, and joined sales calls to answer technical questions. I worked across Elixir, Node, Angular, React, AWS, and Terraform.

  9. 2010 to 2015

    Earlier Maps and pipelines

At BSD Consulting I was the only engineer on a web platform for pipeline data, server and client, from prototype through delivery. Before that I was a research assistant at the Conrad Blucher Institute, where I built mobile mapping applications for land surveying with survey-grade GPS and RTK field collection, funded in part by NOAA. I interned at Esri, writing geoprocessing scripts for disaster response, and at Shell, writing Python automation for spatial data pipelines and raster generation from raw sonar, which included seven days at sea on a hydrographic survey.

Crew aboard Elissa

Elissa is a three-masted iron barque built in Aberdeen in 1877 and sailed today out of Galveston. I stand watches, work aloft, and handle sail on day sails in the Gulf.

The 2026 passage

In June 2026 she sailed from the Gulf up the Atlantic coast to New York, and I was aboard. The passage rounded Cape Hatteras, went up Chesapeake Bay to Annapolis, through the C&D Canal, and out Delaware Bay into the Atlantic for the run up the New Jersey coast.

onlytallships.com

I kept the ship's log for that passage underway and published it at onlytallships.com. The site is built with Astro and has a Leaflet chart of every geotagged entry, an RSS feed, a guestbook, and a small browser editor for writing entries from the ship.

05 · Photography

Outside the Obvious

I photograph fashion shows from backstage and life aboard tall ships. Most of the runway work is made in the hour before the doors open, during fittings, makeup, and last alterations. I have shot at New York Fashion Week and in Houston since 2018, across more than ninety runway shows.

Before the show

I make these backstage at runway shows. I also produce shows through Atelier Actara, so I am usually working the show I am photographing.

Night watch

I make these aboard Elissa, on day sails out of Galveston and on the 2026 passage to New York. Part of this work is on film, which I develop myself.

Books and prints

I have published three photo books: A Poem of Lima, Midnight at Main, and Mis. I sell prints of selected photographs through the print room on the site.

Rod Tips Only

Rod Tips Only puts five fishing rods on a dock in Louisiana and waits for a bite. I model each rod as a tapered cantilever beam, a chain of rigid links joined by torsion springs and solved with XPBD, so the bend under a fish matches a real rod. It runs as a PWA and has a replay system, catch cards, and a depression meter.
